Quick answer: Battery preconditioning warms your EV’s battery pack before you drive or fast-charge in cold weather, so the pack accepts charge faster and delivers power more efficiently. (Cabin preconditioning — a warm interior before you get in — is a separate function.) This article documents what the MG4 owner’s handbook (Australia) and the XPeng G6 2025 RHD owner’s manual (V5.6.0) actually say about battery preheating — and, for BYD, what a UK dealer guide documents plus the questions UK owners are still asking, because no export owner’s manual page verifying a dedicated BYD battery-preheat trigger was available for this article.

What preconditioning is (and what it isn’t)
One BYD owner in the UK asked exactly the right question after pressing the precondition button: “how does the car know what temperature I want it to be set at?” The word covers two separate jobs:
- Cabin preconditioning — heating the interior and clearing the glass before you get in. You set the target temperature (in the app or car). Mostly comfort and safety.
- Battery preconditioning — warming the high-voltage pack so it accepts fast charging and delivers power efficiently. The car’s battery management decides the target; you only trigger it.
This is the mix-up to avoid: warming the cabin for 20 minutes and then expecting fast-charging speeds — a warm cabin doesn’t mean the pack has reached fast-charging temperature. This article is about the battery side.
Which evidence covers which car
| Brand / version | What we verified | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| MG4 EV Urban (Australia) | Automatic in-transit battery heating when navigating to a charging station in low temperatures; automatic battery heating during low-temperature charging | Owner’s handbook, “Intelligent Heating”, p. 9 (strong) |
| MG4 SE / early UK cars | Manual Intelligent Battery Heating switch in the charging menu; the car suggests enabling it when cold; iSmart app Battery Heating slider with scheduling (UK/European app versions) | UK/European owner reports on mgevs.com (medium — owner-tested, not handbook-verified) |
| XPeng G6 (2025 RHD, manual V5.6.0) | Two functions: scheduled Low-Temperature Battery Preheating; Intelligent Insulation for Navigation (automatic when navigating to a fast charger, with a manual/voice “preconditioning now” switch for familiar stations without nav) | 2025 RHD owner’s manual, Charging Instructions chapter, PDF pp. 314–316 (strong — verified against the cited copy) |
| BYD (Dolphin / Atto 3 / Seal, UK) | Preconditioning while plugged in; scheduling charging + climate via connected features | BYD UK dealer winter guide, published 15 Oct 2026 (medium — dealer guidance, not a factory manual) |
| BYD (UK) | Open owner questions (Seal app preheat; slow fast-charging sessions) — no verified dedicated battery-preheat trigger in the sources available | Individual UK owner posts (weak — questions and anecdotes, not verified operations) |
Scope notes: the dealer guide lists “DOLPHIN, ATTO 3, SEAL or SEAL U” — but the UK Seal U DM-i is a plug-in hybrid, so its battery-heating behaviour may differ from the pure-electric models. China-market materials describing a manual “Battery Preheat” button could not be tied to a specific model, year or original source, and nothing equivalent has been verified on export models — treat China-market how-tos with caution on a UK/AU car.
How to turn it on: MG4
- Urban (Australia, per handbook p. 9): largely automatic — navigate to a charging station in a low-temperature environment and the car preheats the pack en route (“in-transit heating”); battery heating also engages automatically during low-temperature fast or slow charging.
- SE / early UK cars (per owner reports): Intelligent Battery Heating is a switch in the charging menu (owners describe it on the third tab) — it is not nav-linked on these cars, and the car pops up a suggestion to enable it when it’s cold.
- iSmart app (per UK/European owner reports): open the battery tile, find the Battery Heating slider just above the Start Charging button; a schedule option sits behind the settings icon — one Croatia-based owner (Nov 2024) quoted the app’s suggestion to schedule heating about 1.5 hours before use (mgevs.com). Not universal: an Australian owner in the Essence 64 thread said the entry was missing in their app version, so treat the slider as version-dependent. Cabin preheat is separate: set a target temperature in the app and the HVAC runs about 10 minutes per request; owners report a two-requests-in-a-row cap (example thread, Nov 2024) — owner-observed, not an official limit.
How to turn it on: XPeng G6 (2025 RHD, manual V5.6.0)
The manual describes two battery-temperature functions in its Charging Instructions chapter:
- 1. Low-Temperature Battery Preheating (PDF pp. 314–315) — the scheduled one: central screen → Charging and Discharging → Charging → turn on “Low Temperature Battery Preheating” and set the duration as a finish time. The manual says it heats the pack using the AC charging pile’s electricity. Constraints for this function: plug in the cable and lock the car; set the preheat to finish after any scheduled slow charge; use the car soon after it completes (long parking wastes the heat); it won’t activate if the pack is already warm; it slightly increases AC charging energy use.
- 2. Intelligent Insulation for Navigation (PDF pp. 315–316) — for fast-charging days. Its Operation section gives two usage modes: (a) automatic — navigate to a fast charging station on the central screen and the car holds the traction battery within its optimal charging temperature range to shorten charging time; (b) manual/voice — the same section provides a “Temperature Control before Fast Charging” on/off switch, and when heading to a familiar station without navigation you can trigger “Battery temperature preconditioning now” manually or by voice. The manual notes this function heats or cools the pack and consumes some of the pack’s remaining capacity.
What BYD documents (and what owners still ask)
Dealer-documented (BYD UK dealer guide, 15 Oct 2026): precondition the vehicle while it’s still connected to a charger, and schedule charging + climate in advance through the car’s connected features. That’s general guidance — the guide doesn’t document a dedicated battery-preheat button or menu path per model.
Not verified: no export owner’s manual page confirming a BYD-specific battery-preheat trigger (navigation-based or otherwise) was available for this article. The two owner questions below show where the documentation gap actually bites.
Limits and conditions
- “On the grid” is not a guarantee. Preheating while plugged in shifts the energy cost to the charge point only if the charger is actively delivering enough power. If the charger’s output is limited, paused, or the car prioritises topping up the pack, some heating energy can still come from the battery.
- Short trips may not repay the cost. Several MG4 owners posting on mgevs.com say that on short local drives, the energy spent heating the pack isn’t recouped in efficiency gains — they reserve scheduled heating for long-trip days or fast-charge stops.
- One owner’s measurement, not a lab test. An mgevs.com owner (Nov 2024) set battery heating at 10:00 and found it had stopped by 10:45 with about 3% of charge used (thread) — a single uncontrolled observation; it doesn’t prove 45 minutes of continuous heating, and the pack size is unknown, so no kWh figure can be derived.
- Software moves menus. App versions and infotainment updates relocate switches; if a control isn’t where described, check the manual for your model year and market.
Owner questions, answered
“Can you precondition the Seal from the app — heating, seats, before I get in?”
A Seal owner asked exactly this (Facebook, Feb 2026). Cabin preheating from the app: yes — remote climate is the standard way to get into a warm, defrosted car. But remote climate is cabin-focused, and no dedicated battery-preheat path for the Seal appears in the sources available for this article — the dealer guide covers plugged-in preconditioning in general terms only. If you own a Seal and your manual documents a battery-preheat control, that’s the authority; this article doesn’t fill that gap.
“My MG4 SE has no sat nav — how do I turn intelligent battery heating on?”
A genuine point of confusion on mgevs.com. On the SE it’s not nav-linked: owners describe a switch in the charging menu, with the car suggesting it when cold. The iSmart app’s battery-tile slider (UK/European app versions) is the other path. Don’t expect the Australian Urban handbook’s automatic nav-triggered behaviour on an early UK SE — different versions, different logic.
“Should I preheat the battery before my overnight home charge when it’s cold?”
An MG4 owner on cheap overnight charging asked whether to preheat first (mgevs.com). Posters in the thread converge on: for ordinary AC home charging, preheating the pack first buys little — the battery warms as it charges and drives. The exception they describe is a very cold night where you want to leave with a warm, efficient pack: schedule battery heating while the car is connected and the charger is actively delivering enough power — with the usual caveat that limited charger output or the car’s own power allocation can still leave some of the heating load on the battery (see Limits).
“I only got about 30 kW at a fast charger — is my car faulty?”
A BYD owner (model not stated in the post) reported ~30 kW across two Tesla supercharger sessions and asked whether the car was at fault (Facebook, May 2026). A cold pack is one possible explanation — cold batteries accept less power — but with no battery-temperature or charger-status data in the thread, the cause can’t be ranked from the post alone. Note the boundary from the evidence table: no verified BYD battery-preheat trigger is documented in this article’s sources, so there’s no confirmed en-route preconditioning step to recommend for a BYD here. If slow charging persists in mild weather, have the car checked.
“Cold days are destroying my range — will preconditioning fix it?”
A much-discussed winter thread in the BYD group has an owner watching displayed range fall far faster than miles driven (Facebook, Nov 2025). Preconditioning addresses the avoidable part — the energy that would otherwise come from the pack to warm a stone-cold battery and cabin. It doesn’t change the underlying physics: cold packs are less efficient and heaters draw power, so a preheat routine can’t be guaranteed to restore summer range. Done while the charger is actively delivering enough power, the warm-up cost is borne by the grid rather than your range — subject to the same charger-output and power-allocation caveats as above.
